Application of the method of transcranial electrical stimulation in the process of training athletes

City Medical and Sports Dispensary, St. Petersburg

Introduction.

In modern sports, high requirements are put forward for athletes involved in martial arts. One of the most important is the development of tolerance for pain. In such sports as boxing, karate, wrestling, considerable attention is paid to this.

In martial arts, in the process of training and competitive activities, sports injuries with pain occur in up to 90% of cases, which reduces the effectiveness of tactical and technical actions of athletes.

It is necessary to take into account the prescription of WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency), which sharply limits the possibility of using analgesic drugs.

Materials and methods.

As a means of increasing pain tolerance, we used the method of transcranial electrical stimulation (TES). In the course of the study, the apparatus for TES “Transair-01” with a complex of electrodes and an algesimeter for testing sensitivity to pain (based on the measurement of electrical conductivity during the galvanic skin reflex) was used.

Physical performance was assessed by the PWC 170 method and individual speed-strength reactions were measured. The experimental group consisted of 20 male athletes, aged 18-21, candidates and masters of sports. The observation period was 5 months. A similar group of 10 athletes acted as a control.

Results.

Testing was carried out during the training and competitive periods. The assessment of the success of this procedure was based on the results of functional studies and competition protocols, which were analyzed during the entire experiment. At the same time, the following information was taken into account: the occupied place in the competition, the number and quality of victories and defeats of the wrestler, the performance of sports categories, the level of competition and the quality of training of rivals.

Particular attention was paid to the subjective assessments of athletes. During the period of the experiment, its participants competed in 2 tournaments and training bouts were held.

Conclusion.

Thus, the TES method is effective both for single and periodic use and leads to a significantly increased pain tolerance in athletes. An increase in the physical performance of athletes was noted. The TES method is easy to use, affordable and non-addictive.
